As you’ve probably seen from my blogs I’ve been diving more and more into the social media camps of San Antonio and loving every minute of it. The knowledge base out there is great and they are really trying a lot of new and innovative ways to reach people through the various social media channels – Twitter, Facebook and my least favorite, Myspace. As a result of this swimming with the cool kids I’m picking up more and more people following me on Twitter and Facebook. The Facebook thing I can manage. When they annoy me I just hide them from the stream. Simple and easy. The Twitter thing is a different matter. You see, with Twitter there really is no filter to manage the stream. TweetDeck allows you to categorize the tweets based on the interest of the person. Still, if a person tweets excessively they flood the stream. So why do I see that as a problem? Read more…
So I think there’s a trend developing with my recent activities. I’ve been spending a lot more time with the social media, marketing and public relations community in San Antonio. Don’t get me wrong. They’re a great bunch of people with some really cool ideas. It’s just that I’m supposed to be a political and techy nerd and not one of these public relations dudes. That’s not my training or style. So why am I spending time with them? Because I’m learning a lot with regards to getting the message out as well as trying to contribute to the community where I can from my experiences. I’m hoping to translate that back into the political and non-profit groups that I spend time with. Mashing these themes together will hopefully help improve San Antonio in general. But what has it taught me so far? Read more…
This past weekend I had a great experience at the first Tweet Camp SA organized by Andi Narvaez (@andinarvaez), Jennifer Navarrete (@epodcaster), and Colleen Pence (@colleenpence). The sessions were great and followed the traditional bar camp format. Throughout the day several social media people in the San Antonio area participated in some great presentations about everything Twitter. Through some scheduling changes I ended up presenting with another great social media person, Angela Bartels (@safun) from Rackspace Cloud (@rackcloud), on how to leverage social media tools like Facebook and Twitter in applications through the APIs. Then the fun began with regards to Twitter followings. Read more…
I’m spending most of the day today at the first Tweet Camp SA, a full day of all things Twitter and social media. Over 200 people have registered for the day of events providing information on a variety of topics ranging from Twitter 101 to strategies for how to use Twitter in your business or organization. Throughout the day I’ll try to post up some of the interesting topics being presented by some of the great people involved in social media in San Antonio. So far the sessions have been good at providing information on the usage and capabilities of Twitter. Shout out to the organizers.

I’ve been adding more and more to my social media toolkits lately. I’m now on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and I’m blogging on three different blogs. I’ve also made Facebook my home page on both my laptop and my cell phone. I text and I e-mail. I’d say I’m pretty connected. These days I may be too connected as I’ve found that as others join these channels I’m starting to drop into information overload of a trivial nature. Now I have friends on Twitter and Facebook telling me if they are feeling good, bad, or just feeling. Note to them: Too much information! Read more…
