The good, bad and ugly of the 2009 municipal election

This municipal election was a first for several of the candidates and, in speaking to them, they learned a lot about what it takes to mount a campaign in San Antonio. In many ways, this election was a new experience for me as well even though I have been an active voter in San Antonio during my 22 years here. After engaging online during the term limits election and creating an online presence in the form of RBearSAT I finally decided to start blogging. An apology

Last week during Fiesta activities I ran into Donze Lopez a couple of times towards the later part of the week. Donze is a key part of the Trish Deberry-Mejia mayoral campaign. As some may know I haven’t been the kindest to him in some of my comments. That behavior stems from some things that happened earlier in the campaign cycle. More on that in a minute. During one of the encounters Donze asked me why I had to be so mean. While I blew the comment off at the time it made me reflect some yesterday and I honestly owe him an apology. I have been mean to him in comments in an unwarranted manner. Just as I’ve said regarding Trish that my opposition to her candidacy is not personal, the same applies to Donze. Read more…

Campaign finance in San Antonio mayoral race

Last week the San Antonio City Clerk’s office released the campaign finance reports filed by the candidates in the upcoming municipal election, as reported by the Express-News. The reports were filed for the 30 days out from the election and will be our next to last look at the campaigns until after the election. The last report will come eight days before the election but this report gives a very good indication of how the candidates are doing going into the home stretch of the election. What is interesting in the mayoral race is the strength or weakness of the candidates at a time when the most money will be spent with media buys. Read more…

Importance of on-line presence in a campaign

This morning I was checking the candidate’s websites to see if anything had changed recently. Something apparently was with Diane Cibrian’s site. It was down and had been all night. The absence of the site had me wondering if R’s comment in the debate open thread had some merit to it. I doubt that is the case but the sheer absence of the site these days sends a message of uncertainty to voters about the status of a candidate.  Read more…
