She was an inspiration to so many of us

October 14th, 2011 2 comments

Estelle BearWednesday my grandmother, Estelle Bear, ended her journey here on earth only to continue it in heaven with her husband, Dempsey Bear. At almost 98 years old, she was a true inspiration for all who knew her, especially her grandchildren who called her “Mamma” in the good Southern style. Tomorrow we lay her to rest beside her husband but, more importantly, we celebrate her life here on earth and what she meant to us all. Today I figured I’d take a personal privilege of my blog to share my thoughts about her and what she meant to me. It’s a good way to pay tribute to such a wonderful and endearing person.

Let Facts be submitted to a candid world

July 3rd, 2011 No comments

Tomorrow we celebrate the 235th anniversary of the event that lead to the birth and formation of our country, the signing of the Declaration of Independence. That act of 56 brave and wise founders put in motion the development of one of the most enduring Republics in the world. For all the strife and conflict we may have within our country, it is still a free and just society that provides for individual opportunity and allows for public discourse to all its citizens. While many may focus on the dialogue centered around the act of independence, I find it eve more interesting how seriously these men took this course of action, risking their very lives and livelihoods to help build a new nation.

Events calendar

March 2nd, 2011 3 comments

I’ve restored my Events Calendar to hopefully provide a listing of political events, especially related to the 2011 Municipal elections. There’s so much going on this year it’s important for citizens to stay engaged when they can. I’ll try to stay abreast of all the events and post what I think would be significant for voter interest. This won’t be a place to advertise your campaign events but more for public forums such as candidate forums or city events. If you have an event you think should be listed send it through my contact form using Events as the topic. I can’t guarantee it will be listed based on my criteria. I don’t want to become a general clearinghouse for fundraisers and blockwalks.

The value of age

December 26th, 2010 1 comment

Today in my normal blog readings I came across a gem written by Lynn Casteel Harper in the Huffington Post. Lynn is an ordained Baptist minister and retirement community chaplain. In her post today she talks about the generational value of seniors in our society. She points out that our society has become so consumer-focused we often place less value on those intangible assets our seniors have, both in society and in the church. After spending some time with my parents this weekend I can see her point. My parents are an example of where true value exists. Read more…

Christmas traditions – old and new

December 25th, 2010 No comments

This morning, while watching A Christmas Story as one of my recent Christmas traditions, I started to recall some of the other traditions that have come and gone over the years. Christmas is the one holiday season that creates the greatest traditions between family and friends. Those traditions help bring us together during the season and build a legacy of memories as we get older. Everyone has them, some we cherish and some we try not to remember. Sometimes we borrow traditions from others to add to our own. Regardless, Christmas is a season of traditions. Read more…

Trying out Windows Live Writer

October 20th, 2010 1 comment

I’m exploring the usage of Windows Live Writer in composing blog entries. Apparently it was a part of a recent update by Microsoft of their Live tool set. While this is really just a test entry for future blog entries it seems to be much more in that it lets me compose offline and publish up later. Hopefully this will allow me to create more entries in the future and keep more consistency in publishing. Thanks for humoring me with this test entry. I promise it will be the last but, based on what I’m seeing, it will become the norm for publishing in the future.

Great minds think … differently

September 28th, 2010 No comments

You’ve heard the phrase “great minds think alike.” Last night, after spending the evening chatting with some of the speakers for the upcoming TEDx San Antonio event I realized that great minds don’t always think alike and that’s okay. It’s that diversity of thinking that helps us get out of the box and start to discover new ways of accomplishing great dreams. If we all thought alike, we’d end up with the same old solutions for a vast array of different problems. So, in my simple mind, it’s okay to think differently and to have diversity of thought. That’s what TEDx San Antonio is striving to achieve with the first class of speakers for the event. Read more…
